April was born in Lafayette, Louisiana. She is a graduate of Teurlings Catholic High School
and the University of Louisiana at Lafayette with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science.
She earned her Juris Doctorate degree in 2004 from the Southern University Law Center in Baton Rouge,
Louisiana.
While attending Southern University Law School,
she participated in the Civil/Administrative law clinic, where she assisted in co-representing
underprivileged clients. She also interned with Butler & Hosch, a mortgage banking law firm in Baton Rouge.
